Bratislava 2 – Day 14

I decided to go to Danubiana Art Museum, 20 km south of downtown Bratislava, very near the border of Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria. It opened in 2000, and was founded by Gerard Meulensteen of Eindhoven, a Dutch collector and art patron, and Vincent Polakovič, a Slovak gallerist. It’s a 22 km ride from the hotel,Continue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 14”

Bratislava 2 – Day 13

Rain was forecast for today, but I set an alarm last night, just in case the forecast was wrong, and I could do a longer bike ride. Alas, it was raining when I awoke, and quite heavily. So I didn’t rush out of bed or over my breakfast. I felt less like I had aContinue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 13”

Bratislava 2 – Day 12

I had a restful night of sleep, but woke feeling like I’m getting a cold. My throat was a bit irritated the last two nights by a soapy smell in the room, and the air quality in our room had suddenly become quite poor the last two nights, as well, so I’m hoping it’s related.Continue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 12”

Bratislava 2 – Day 11

Michael met with his Slovak language tutor for a couple hours this morning, and I just relaxed in the room. After lunch, we walked to the only remaining city gate. It has been under renovation for a while, but recently reopened. Tickets are purchased in the Red Crayfish Pharmacy building a former pharmacy from the 16th century.Continue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 11”

Bratislava 2 – Day 9

It was raining heavily when I got up today, and continued as I had my breakfast in the dining room. So I went back to the room to plan some routes for less rainy days. However, a little before noon I noticed that the sun was shining. One of the rides I had planned wasContinue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 9”

Bratislava 2 – Day 8

Today I decided to ride to the most visited sightseeing venue in all of Slovakia  – Hrad (Castle) Devin. I decided to do a loop so that most of the route would be new to me, and I chose to do the climbing part at the beginning when my legs were fresh. Today was the firstContinue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 8”

Bratislava 2 – Day 7

It was quite a bit cooler today with a high of 4° feeling like minus one. I waited until midday to head out and bundled up with a down jacket, ski mitts, and balaclava under my helmet. This street has streetcar tracks, bike lanes in both direction, parking, and one-way only lanes for motor vehicleContinue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 7”

Bratislava 2 – Day 5

What an absolutely exceptional day I had today. I set my alarm for 8 AM, dressed in my cycling gear, and went down to the luggage room to bring the bike up to the room. I installed a bike seat that I know is comfortable that I brought from home, my lights and a barContinue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 5”

Bratislava 2 – Day 4

We had another late breakfast, and then walked to the Schokocafe Maximilian for hot chocolate that is more like fondue than what we call hot chocolate in Canada. It was delicious. This will be my motto for the next couple weeks. I’ve only been seeing one or two bike, share bikes per docking station, soContinue reading “Bratislava 2 – Day 4”

Hamilton- Day 7

We decided to walk to Steve’s Open Kitchen for breakfast. It took us past Hamilton City Hall, where there is a topiary Tiger-Cats mascot, mini football field, and football. There is also the now ubiquitous large public art sculpture of the name of the city. Adjacent to City Hall is Whitehern, a well preserved, statelyContinue reading “Hamilton- Day 7”
